Two Research Assistant (Research Experience Placement) positions are available at the Earlham Institute (EI) during the summer of 2019, supported by the BBSRC Norwich Research Park Doctoral Training Partnership.
The Earlham Institute (EI) is a research institute focused on exploring living systems by applying computational science and biotechnology to answer ambitious biological questions and generate enabling resources.
These exciting placements are designed to:
- Give promising undergraduates a first-hand opportunity to gain greater experience of research in the an academic setting
- Raise the profile of research careers amongst undergraduate students
- Interest students in postgraduate research of aligned to the BBSRC strategic priorities
To be eligible to apply you will need to be registered at a UK University and be expected to obtain a first or upper second class honours degree in a basic science (including mathematics and engineering) or veterinary subject. These projects are designed for undergraduates in their penultimate year of first degree study to find out more about their suitability and aptitude for further research.
This placement is for eight weeks during the summer vacation of 2019. Each placement-holder will be paid the National Living Wage. The student and the awarding department are required to submit a brief report on the outcome of the placement to BBSRC on completion of the placement.
About the projects:
The successful applicants will be able to work on one of three projects. Please click on the following links to learn more about each project:
- Genetic diversity in a crop progenitor Beta vulgaris subsp. Maritima
- Characterisation of alternative splicing pattern of Voltage Gated Calcium Channels across tissues and lifespan in human
- Transcriptomic analysis in rice during stress conditions using R/Rstudio

Applications for projects in an area of science different from the applicant’s main subject area are encouraged.
