I am studying undergraduate Biomedical Sciences (BSc) at Brunel University London and I am at Earlham Institute for a placement year through the Year in Industry programme. Over the past five years, I have been continually fascinated by genetics and genomics, and motivated by the exponential development in the area. I have particularly enjoyed learning about the mechanisms of sequencing, and about its applications, such as evolutionary and conservational studies, genetic testing for diseases and forensic DNA profiling.

I chose to undertake a placement year in order to experience science and research in “real life”, to put the knowledge I have been accruing at university into practise, and to scope out career ideas and opportunities. Since starting at EI, I have already discovered a great deal about genomics and sequencing techniques and platforms, and I fully intend to continue learning and experiencing as much as possible in order to develop further as a young scientist. With the skills gained from my year here at Earlham, I am confident that I will stand out from my peers when applying for jobs after my degree.
