Geoff Plumb

Geoff was the Lab Manager for the Institute supporting Genomics Pipelines, DNA Foundry and Science Faculty labs. His role was to manage the space, equipment and facilities and to interface with NBIP-supplied services ensuring the smooth, efficient and safe running of the laboratories. 

Geoff is a biochemist with over 20 years of experience as a research scientist and over 10 years of experience as a Lab Manager. He recently held a lead role in the design and set up of the laboratories and facilities at the new Quadram building before joining EI in May 2019.

Geoff completed his degree in Biochemistry at the University of Sheffield in 1984 and was subsequently appointed as a Scientific Officer at the Food Research Institute in Norwich working as a plant biochemist isolating and characterising 7S and 11S proteins from legumes. He was subsequently involved in the development of a dipstick allergy assay for the rapid detection of peanut contamination in food. After the Institute refocussed its science in 1989, Geoff helped establish the Phytochemicals Team looking at the health benefits of these compounds in fruits and vegetables, managing the laboratories and curating the cell culture facilities. Projects worked on included;

  • antioxidant properties of a range of polyphenols in fruits and vegetables
  • modulation of anti-cancer genes in cell culture models
  • the development of “super broccoli”

 

In 2007 Geoff was appointed as Laboratory Manager at IFR looking after a diverse portfolio of biochemistry, molecular biology and analytical labs and also the Human Nutrition Unit and Biorefinery. In 2018 Geoff was appointed as Head of Laboratory Operations at Quadram Institute Bioscience taking on additional responsibilities and duties.
