Alex Durrant

I joined EI in 2019 as a Senior Research Assistant within the Technical Genomics Group. My primary function is to develop, hone and implement extraction protocols for DNA and RNA from diverse sample types, including animal, plant and insect tissue.

A significant part of my role focuses on developing methods for isolating high molecular weight DNA for PacBio and Nanopore sequencing, with the goal of ultimately automating much of the extraction process.

Prior to joining EI I worked within a microbiology group at the University of Alabama, under Professor Jeff Morris. Here, we used experimental evolution methods to assess how populations of marine photosynthetic algae might respond, genomically and transcriptionally, to ocean acidification.
