Chinemerem Akamihe

Chinemerem is a pre-doctoral intern at the Earlham Institute’s Biofoundry. She recently completed an MPhil in Crop Science at the University of Cambridge, supported by the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship.

Her research interests lie in crop molecular biology, with a particular focus on plant responses to abiotic stress and strategies for improving crop resilience in the face of climate change.

During her MPhil, she investigated Arabidopsis thaliana to explore how transpirational cooling and stomatal traits may help reduce heat-induced sterility during reproductive development. She also has a strong interest in legumes and in applying insights from model systems to crops of importance in agriculture.

At the Earlham Biofoundry, she hopes to explore the integration of synthetic biology with traditional plant science and identify ways to develop innovative approaches for enhancing crop resilience, which she intends to build on further as a PhD student.

Ultimately, she aims to contribute to research that not only advances scientific understanding but also delivers relevant agricultural solutions globally.
